ENGLISH SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2015
Golden Girl Hurdler - Issy Wakefield
Wins English Schools IG 80m Hurdles Title and sets
New Club Record of 11.13secs (w)
Congratulations to Isabel Wakefield on winning the IG 80M Hurdles at the ESAA Champs in Gateshead last weekend.
Issy pictured with her Coach Gary Gahan now look forward to her representing England at the Schools International Match in Grangemouth, Scotland next Saturday 18th July.
STOP PRESS: Issy placed 2nd in the SIAB International posted a legal NDAC Club Record time of 11.23secs - congratulations!
The premier national competition in the Schools athletic calendar saw eight athletes from North Devon AC carry the banner of their club and Devon Schools – a tremendous achievement for a small rural athletics club. Each athlete had negotiated a series of competitions through North Devon, Devon, South West Championships before securing selection to compete for their county in a 35 athlete team representing Devon Schools.
FULL VIDEO COVERAGE BY VINCO as follows:
Isabel Wakefield sailed through her first round in the Inter Girls 80m Hurdles with a time of 11.32secs before improving to a Club record 11.13secs in winning her semi-final. In the final she edged victory by just 200ths of a second with a time of 11.34secs in very difficult wind conditions. Isabel, a Year 10 pupil at West Buckland School is coached by Gary Gahan who is pictured above with her. Isabel is UK ranked Number 1 in her event and now goes on to represent England at the Schools International being held at Grangemouth Stadium in Scotland on Saturday 18th July. Good luck!

Charley Davey-James also hit the medals with Bronze in the Junior Girls Shot with a new Club record of 12.38metres. Under the guidance of coach Colin Petty, Charley has steadily improved throughout the season and her performance is ranked 6th all-time in the UK and 3rd in 2015. Her fellow Braunton Academy student Emma Sharpe entered the competition as UK ranked 9th but despite the very difficult wind conditions threw really well to place 5th in the Junior Girls Discus with a distance of 31.43metres in a very close competition. Emma is coached by Gill St Barbe/Ryan Norman. Watch her Vinco video HERE
Yet another Finalist was 13 year old Great Torrington School student Emily Tyrrell, another athlete from the Gill St Barbe/Ryan Norman coaching group, who finished 9th in the Junior Girls Long Jump. After encountering very difficult head winds in the qualifying round and just making the final Emily moved up the field in the final recording 5.14metres, again into a headwind.
In the Inter Girls 1500m Steeplechase Martika Gallagher, who is coached by Mark Brace and attends Park School produced the biggest improvement by a North Devon AC athlete. Her 7 second personal best improvement to 5m14.76secs produced 7th place in the final in a high quality race and a New Club Record. Congratulations! Watch the video of Martika's race HERE - spool to 5:05.30
Ben Sutton, who is coached by Gary Gahan and attends Chulmleigh Academy was close to his best in his 1st round Inter Boys 400 metres heat with 50.49secs and easily qualified for the semi-finals where he initially just missed out on a place in the final before benefitting from a disqualification and securing a place in the final when he ran brilliantly to secure 7th place in a time of 51.80secs.
Megan Gallagher who has enjoyed a fantastic improvement this season contested the highly technical Inter Girls 300m Hurdles and was slightly below her best in the windy conditions running 47.81secs in her heat and did not progress. Her Vinco video is HERE. Fellow Great Torrington School student and her twin Caitlin Gallagher placed 19th in the Inter Girls Triple Jump with a distance of 10.11metres in a another competition plagued by headwinds. Both sisters who are coached by Gary Gahan will have gained valuable experience competing at the highest level and, like Isabel Wakefield, will compete in the same age group next year.

SPENCER DUVAL visits Braunton Track
South West Area steeplechasers, including a number from NDAC enjoyed a very enlightening session with Spencer Duval, GB international and ex-Olympian. We are indebted to Mark Brace for arranging the session. The context of the training was quite innovative. From the start, everyone tackled the water jump irrespective of experience or ability. Emphasis was placed on efficiency over the barriers and the skill of stepping out of the water.
This was the first course Spencer had staged since being appointed England Athletics Head of Endurance last week.

28.7.15: There were a host of personal best and season's best performances at the Exeter BMC Meeting last night. Despite experiencing a difficult evening for fast times with a strong head wind in the back straight there were a host of improvements by NDAC athletes. Well done to everyone who made the trip!

Jack Hutchens ran an impressive 8m44.10secs over 3000m to hack 6 seconds from the previous club record. Running the first kilometre in a conservative 2m58 he began to move steadily through the field and a 64secs last lap saw him easily set new figures and a huge pb - congratulations Jack!!

UKA Youth Development League Midland Div 1
The final match of the national league for U13/15 teams was held at Yeovil - despite the potential for each of the top four teams to gain promotion all clubs were severely depleted and there were many spaces left unfilled throughout the day. No doubt the lure of homebased activities, the start of the school holidays and the SW Champs the next day played their part. Unfortunately, NDAC suffered more than most in this department and team management was not helped by last minute unavailability and withdrawals on the day of the match. The top two teams have been promoted to the Premiership - NDAC remain in this division next year. Performances of the day for NDAC were by Ruby Barnes with U13 Girls Javelin 28.56m UK 12th 2015, Andrew Watt U13 Boys 800m 2m33.8, Emily Tyrrell U15 Girls 300m 43.9secs, Shae Miles U13 Girls 1200m 4m09.8secs and Finley Ball U13 Boys 1500m 5m07.3secs

Isabel is 2015 UK Ranked No. 2 and has qualified for the National Schools Champs being held at Bedford International Stadium in Sept.
NORTH DEVON AC finished a very close third in UKA Youth League Midlands Div 1. at Yate on Sat 20.6.15
Despite fielding a heavily depleted team following unavailability and injuries suffered the day before, NDAC enjoyed a very successful day's athletics at Yate. Windy conditions were really difficult for the middle distance runners but helped some of our sprinters to fast times. This league always favours home team advantage and this, in turn, made for a four team scrap throughout the day. Until the last relays NDAC were really in the hunt for victory having battled for every point with North Somerset, South Wales and Yate. Well done Ryan Norman for juggling his troops to best advantage! Congratulations to our athletes who not only tackled their normal events, but also 'had a go' at unfamiliar events - some with remarkable success too! For some the vision of our four U15 Boys throwers making a good job of their changeovers in the 4x100m relay really epitomised the team squad element of club athletics which, unfortunately, is beginning to disappear. The last match of the season will be hosted by Yeovil at the Bill Whistlecroft Stadium and should be an exciting affair with promotion to the Midland Premiership a real possibility for the three leading teams.
Our Under 15 Girls continue to show strength in depth and are surely the equal of anyone in the country. Even without the talented duo of Charlotte Sutton and Olivia Sayer they dominated the opposition.
Emma Sharpe set yet another NEW CLUB RECORD in the U15 Girls Discus with 32.29m to go 8th in the UK while UK 4th ranked Charley Davey-James was close to her best in the Shot with 11.78m.
Erin Sylvester looks to have potential as a long sprinter as she ran a good 44.5secs pb in the 300m chasing Welsh No 2 Hannah Longden all the way home. This after an 800m and pb High Jump of 1.36m. Emily Tyrrell was close to her day old pb of 11.82secs in the hurdles with 11.9secs while Samantha Phillips really showed her potential as sprinter with 26.4secs over 200m.
The Under 15 Boys team were a little thin on the ground but gave their all. The loss of number 1 sprinter Josh Thorne and jumper Declan Jago left huge gaps but everyone rallied round; none more so than Hamish James (great 1500m!), Sammy Watts, Miles Rees and Jordan Choules on the track. Jon Tossel, Adam Ward, Lewis Kellaway-Lindo and Jacob Allchorn dominated the field events with some strong performances.
The Under 13 Girls team faced some very strong opposition, especially in the sprints where Ffion Jones (daughter of Helen Miles ex Welsh International) caught the eye. Ella Fraser-Smith and Trusanna Cooper ran pb 800s while Shae Miles had another fine run over 1200m chasing undefeated Welsh No 2 Nia Clatworthy all the way home in very difficult windy conditions. We badly missed our throwers who would have mopped up on the day - we need you to turn out in the final match.
The Under 13 Boys are beginning to show strength in depth and with a several of them still in the same age group next year we look forward to them improving significantly. There is plenty of competition for places in this age group with several talented youngsters waiting in the wings for a chance to compete.
The middle distance is a strong source of points with Finlay Ball, Henry Cooper and Adam Watt all heading their strings while Jack Dutton, coming back from injury, posted a huge solo pb winning the 'A' string 800m with 2m25.7secs. Luke Hamley, Ellis Rees and Isaac Stephenson all performed well on the track while Joe Hill looks to have great potential as a multi eventer. His Javelin throw of 25.98m was very pleasing.

Topical Athletics News from around the world ...........
Dina Asher-Smith (coach: John Blackie) has broken the British 100m record with a time of 11.02 at the FBK Games in Hengelo.
The world’s top sprinter this year is Justin Gatlin, on his shoulder is Tyson Gay. Both are tainted by drugs and UK Athletics would not issue invitations to either man for an event in this country. Sadly, it is a principled stance not widely reflected.
Athletics currently has two major issues pending. As well as the 150 under a cloud there is an accusation of systematic doping in Russia. ‘I have a suspicion that people in power just do not care,’ said Ed Warner, chairman of UK Athletics. He thinks the delay will make the scandal old news when it finally breaks.
Meanwhile, major events such as the European Indoor Championships go ahead in the knowledge bans may be retrospectively meted out and medals taken away. This cheats the paying customers because the action unfolding before their eyes may prove meaningless. Yet if fans don’t mind, if they continue to lap up merchandise and cheer for cheats regardless, then why bother policing?
